What are some good beginner BMX bikes?
Hey, I want to get a street Bmx Bike that isn’t too expensive, because I am just starting. What would be a good/not so expensive bike for a beginner? And I am 5foot 11inches if that helps with anything.
If you’re 5’11″ forget about beginner. You need something with a 21″ or longer top tube if you can find it.
There are many different types of BMX, some meant for flat land, some for park, urban bikes, really they’re all a blend of these.
My advice, don’t shop by brand name, shop for brand names. Look at individual components on bikes and look for brand names emblazed across everything, like the cranks, brake levers, etc. Cheap junk doesn’t display brand names, but the good guys like to show off. Heck, I bought a replacement bolt to connect my sprocket to my crank and THAT came with a sticker to add to my bike, so did the premium valve stem covers for my Kids Bike.
Go to a Bike Shop and try them on. You can usually find things on sale, people tend to buy cool looking flashy stuff, but I’m telling you, some of those that don’t look as cool at first are just as good if not better and they grow on you. Try them out.
Look for used stuff. I saw a beautiful mid 90′s brand new looking GT on craigslist a couple of days ago for only $50. I had to struggle to not buy the thing (because I need another BMX like I need a hole in the head). That was a primo bike, you can find lots of really really good used stuff cheap, and a lot of crack smokers passing off Wal-Mart junk with peeled off labels as a gold mine, so be careful. Same rule applies, looks for brand name dropping on used stuff also.
If you’re buying used turn the bike upside down resting on the seat and handlebars. Spin the wheels and look for wobble, you don’t want wobble.
